About Jazz Bands

San Marcos High School offers three full big bands for students to participate in: the San Marcos Jazz Orchestra, Jazz B and Jazz C.  In jazz, students will perform jazz and popular literature; learn idiomatic rhythms, articulations and tone; improvisational techniques; and jazz history. All large jazz ensembles will rehearse 0 period as a year-round class.

The San Marcos Jazz Orchestra is the advanced audition-based ensemble where students will excel at sight reading, jazz style, and improvisation. Saxophone players will be proficient on clarinet and flute.  Students in this ensemble regularly perform in concerts and school and community functions and record annually at Studio West.  The San Marcos Jazz Orchestra may also perform in jazz festivals during the spring.

Jazz B is the intermediate audition-based ensemble consisting of students that have a fundamental but growing understanding of jazz improvisation and style. Students in this ensemble also regularly perform in concerts and record annually at Studio West.  Jazz B may also perform in jazz festivals during the spring.

Jazz C is open for all students to join. Students will learn jazz style, rhythm, articulation, phrasing, and improvisation. If a student would like to learn a new instrument that is in the jazz ensemble, they are highly encouraged to join and have the opportunity of playing their new instrument every day. Jazz BC may perform in jazz festivals during the spring and students will play in concerts at SMHS.
