Fall 2017 – Parent Donation Appeal
We hope you enjoyed watching your student take part in our first Fall Concert and recognized the high standard of the performances. We believe our fall field show is also quite impressive. We are very proud of our Music and Color Guard program at San Marcos High School and all that it allows our kids to experience.
We are particularly blessed to have such dedicated and visionary directors in Mr. Radant and Mr. Armstrong. With their passion for music and commitment to their students, they have developed some amazing programs that go beyond the “typical” school music program.
The average high school does not offer three jazz bands, a Conservatory for the Arts, a 275 “anyone can play” marching band, AP Music Theory, Music Composition and Digital Music. Our very unique Axiom stage show and the many programs we run, like the steel drum and Salsa bands, jazz recordings at professional studios, and on-site lessons with amazing coaches, are the icing on the cake! The opportunities that our kids have to experiment musically are unmatched, as is the standard at which they perform. We truly are the envy of all the other schools in our area. Did your high school offer you this range of music options?
Music education has a positive impact that will benefit your student throughout his or her life. The SMHS Music Department has a focus not only on quality music but in helping your students develop qualities that will put them ahead of the pack in the form of; leadership skills, a strong teamwork ethic and respect for others. They understand the importance of dedication, hard work, and grit when they see the results of their efforts in impressive concerts and memorable field shows.
Our music program truly is exceptional but it comes at a price. It’s not possible for just two people to deliver all of the above on their own with 300 students in the program. So how do they do it when the District only pays for two music directors and a small instrument budget? One answer is, Coaches. They are the ones that reduce the student/teacher ratio and provide the specialized instruction your student benefits from. In turn, they make our bands sound like they do, march like they do and dance like they do. With today’s budget realities, the District does not pay for coaching. We do. Along with all the other expenses, the program has, our budget is $162,000 for 2017-18.
The cost per student for the year is approximately $550 per student, marching band and non-marching band students alike. While this is not a ‘pay to play’ program, the program cannot survive intact without every family participating financially in some way. At the beginning of the school year we asked each family to consider making a reasonable donation, within their means, and then to support the fundraisers that help us make up the difference. We really appreciate those who’ve already done so.
Why are we writing to you, the Booster Family? The hard truth is, family donations are down significantly from years past, and participation in fundraisers is also down. As a result, we are facing a sizeable budget shortfall that will mean some aspects of the program will have to be cut in the Spring unless we can inspire everyone to rally around the program and support it financially.
If you have already made an annual donation, or if you are making monthly donations toward that end, we thank you. If you have not yet made an annual donation we ask that you do so now. Please consider setting up a monthly payment plan, or a one-time donation to keep the program on track for the year. Both can be done through our website: www.sanmarcosbands.org/donate.
While you are on the website, please check out some of the events that you might be able to help with during the year; passing out event fliers, talking to local businesses about sponsorships, applying for Donation Matches at your work, donating coffee/food for events, inviting friends/co-workers/family to come enjoy Axiom/Axiom Cafe, and helping us get the word out for all of our fundraisers. We know this can be accomplished with the amazing families we have in this program. This is YOUR program! Let’s make it the best it can be for our kids!
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, we welcome them. Please send them to firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you for your support!!
